NOAA Weather Radio – Primary Warning System for the General Public
The NWS maintains a NOAA weather radio broadcast station operating at 162.525 MHz located on a tower in Chambers County. This is the system that the public uses. They are small, Radio Shack type, weather radios and are used to monitor routine forecasts and WATCHES AND WARNINGS for severe weather. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE IN THEIR HOME. You can get instructions on how to program your weather radio at NWS Weather Radio Information, or you may bring your weather radio to the EMA office located at 3609 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Lanett, AL and we will be glad to program it for you.
Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio! Outdoor warning sirens are only designed to notify those outdoors in severe weather. Weather radios with charged batteries are the most dependable form of notification for your family and business and can be purchased at most local electronics stores.
Wireless Emergency Alerts
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier. Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service.
No signup is required! Alerts are sent automatically to WEA-capable phones during an emergency. You can obtain more information about wireless emergency alerts at NOAA Weather Ready Nation
The SAF-T-Net service is now available in your area as an additional means of alert. Register at Alabama Saf-T-net for the service
NOAA Weather Radio Information
The Best Way to Receive Tornado Warnings, Hazardous Weather Information, and Other Emergency Alerts is via a NOAA Weather Radio.
NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts official weather service warnings, watches, forecasts, and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you and your family do not have an NOAA Weather Radio, please get one today. They can save your life! They can be purchased at Kroger, CVS, and Wal-Greens. Chambers County EMA will be glad to program it for you!
NWR collaborates with the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) Emergency Alert System to provide an “All Hazards” radio network, offering you a complete and reliable source of weather and emergency information. NWR also collaborates with federal, state, and local emergency managers and other public officials to disseminate warning and post-event information for various types of hazards, including natural disasters like earthquakes or avalanches, environmental crises such as chemical releases or oil spills, and public safety concerns such as Amber Alerts or 911 telephone outages.
Known as the “Voice of NOAA’s National Weather Service,” NWR is provided as a public service by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce. NWR includes 1000 transmitters, covering all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific territories. NWR requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of picking up the signal.
As a secondary way to receive alerts (always have more than one way to receive emergency weather alerts!), please download a free weather app to your cell phone.
